Laser Susan and the Light Lathes is an interactive laser craft experience developed by myself and Dina Herring for the Exploratorium's After Dark programing.
Early experiments began with simple fans and phosphorescence powders. Eventually we tried out more powerful motors with a wider variety of materials.
This ultimately became the "Light Lathe."
"Laser Susan" also plays with phosphorescence, but instead of creating volumetric light sculptures, everything remains on a flat plane.
The "Laser Susan" was ultimately coated with phosphorescence vinyl. This allowed the glow to fade over time, and create visual depth, even though the surface remained flat.
While we did experiment with the idea of mixing in pendulums, handheld lasers have an intimacy that facilitates very personal art making.
By varying the type, size and distance of the lasers, "Laser Susan" is able to promote a variety of glowing aesthetics.
Last night, "Laser Susan and the Light Lathes" debuted at After Dark's first ever member's only party.
Here's the description:
Got two turntables and a laser pen? Explore the magic of phosphorescence as we spin the light fantastic. Shape light and watch as tops, lazy Susans, and mini-motors create kinetic light sculptures, using UV lasers and simple materials.
A series of effected video was also created for the event to add to overall mood of play, discovery and wonder.
